The Monterey Series is my latest work for 2016. After spending time in Monterey California last year I was taken by the beauty of the area. The bird life, especially the cormorants, really intriqued me. I had seen this bird many times when I lived in San Francisco but this time I saw it in a new light, especially when they were in large groups on the side of a cliff with their necks bending in every imaginable position. The stark blackness of the bird against the cream and white color of the rock really stood out to me. When I returned home I did 100's of sketches on my IPad of the birds before transferring the ideas to canvas. After many failures, I started to get the feeling that I was after...I felt like I had to become a bird first in order to really let the image fly on it's own...to become more abstract was what had to happen in order to make the leap and capture the essence of the bird.
